Who knew that a battle between an articulate robotic sampling arm and a colonial organism related to soft corals rooted to the seafloor could be so suspenseful? I have no emotional connection to either of these opponents, but I FEEL the utter disappointment of the loser in this epic 50-sec confrontation.

This battle has been brought to you by the deep links project (@_deeplinks,, the RRS James Cook, the ISIS ROV, Anton Dohrn Seamount in the NE Atlantic, the letter U and the support of taxpayers like you.

Kim is a Senior Oceanographer at Sea-Bird Scientific. She received her Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from the University of Washington in 2010. Her goal in life is to throw expensive s**t in the ocean. When not at sea, she has used observations from moored, satellite and land-based instruments to understand the pathways that wind and tidal energy take from large (internal tides) to small scales (turbulence). Her current mission is to make your oceanographic data be the best data it can be.
